Bondi Strength Lab

How Bondi Strength Lab lifted trial bookings 41% with a new site and Android app

An Australian boutique gym needed a faster way for members to book classes. We shipped a new Next.js site and Android app in 23 days, lifting trial bookings 41% and cutting no-shows by over a third.

Site and Android app to production

The challenge

Bondi Strength Lab runs small-group strength classes in Bondi Beach. By late 2025 they had 340 active members and a waitlist for their 7am sessions.

Their booking lived on an old WordPress site bolted to Mindbody. Page load was 6.4 seconds on mobile. The booking flow took seven taps. No Android app existed, and 68% of their members were on Android. Trial signups dropped 19% quarter over quarter because prospects bounced before finishing the form.

Our approach

Maya, the owner, brought us in to fix speed and mobile booking. She did not want to hire a full-time dev at AU$110k.

We scoped it under Web & App Development Advanced at $1,400 per month:

  • up to 50 hours per month
  • rebuild marketing site in Next.js
  • ship a lightweight Android app for class booking
  • migrate existing bookings and Stripe payments

The thesis: if the site loads in under 2 seconds and booking takes three taps, trial conversion recovers.

The execution

Week one was audit and teardown. We ran Lighthouse, found a 42 mobile score, 23 unused plugins, and no caching.

We built:

  1. New Next.js site on Vercel with static pages for classes, coaches, pricing
  2. Booking flow using their existing Pike13 API, wrapped in our own serverless endpoints
  3. Android app in Kotlin, same API, push notifications for class reminders

We shipped in sprints. Design approved day 4. Site live on staging day 11. Android beta to 20 members day 16. Production launch day 23.

Three things mattered:

  1. Speed first: images to WebP, edge caching, no page builder bloat
  2. One codebase for booking logic: web and Android share the same API layer, so bugs get fixed once
  3. Real engineering review: AI generated the initial components, our senior dev reviewed every PR and added tests

Results after 90 days

  • Mobile PageSpeed hit 94, up from 42
  • Trial booking rate up 41%, from 3.1% to 4.4%
  • No-shows down 34% after push reminders in the Android app
  • 1,182 app installs in first 60 days, 73% weekly active
  • Cost was $4,200 total vs. AU$9,000+ per month quoted for an in-house hire

What Maya said

"We went from losing people at checkout to filling classes two days out. The app shipped in three weeks, and my coaches actually use it. Best money we've spent on tech."
